Diary of Oct. 7th

On October 7th, I dined at Hama Sushi (はま寿司).

The salmon was quite fresh, although it didn’t compare to the likes of Sushi Katsumidori (寿司活美登利) or Nemuro Hanamaru (根室花まる). Both the flame-seared salmon and flame-seared cheese salmon were particularly good.

The dish of clams steamed in saké was an unexpected choice but it was delightful, despite the fact that not all of the sand inside the clams had been purged.

I also tried the octopus balls, which were decent.

The flame-seared tuna with a special sauce was quite good. Being a seafood-rich country, Japan certainly has delicious tuna, but often, it seems places opt for a lower-quality tuna to save on costs, which usually has a less appealing taste. However, this dish was a pleasant exception.

Other fish like mackerel were also tasty. It would have been an even more enjoyable experience with some saké.

Upon settling the bill, I found the value for money was pretty good compared to other places.

  1. On October 8th, I revisited Hama Sushi for dinner again (haha).
I indulged in some saké, and as expected, the exquisite fish paired wonderfully with the alcohol.
The flounder was delicious and fresh.
The salmon seemed to have never seen a gym before being prepared as a dish, resulting in a delectably fatty taste.
The sauces at this establishment are truly exceptional. For instance, the flame-seared seafood (including salmon, tuna, shrimp, and more) paired with their sauces were all delightful. They have a rich variety of sauces including yuzu vinegar (my favorite) and kelp vinegar (from Hokkaido!).
I tried the chawanmushi (茶碗蒸し) and frozen grapes; they were alright but not exceptional. The grapes were too icy, almost numbing.
The highlight (締めの一品) was the tuna prepared with a special sauce. However, the tuna felt overly chilled, rendering a grainy icy texture as I chewed, which was something I wasn’t accustomed to. I wasn’t sure if this was a unique feature or not, but I found it less pleasing compared to the same dish I had the previous day, which was smoother and less icy.
